The Unsung Hero of Our Kitchen

One ingredient we can't stay away from, yet often overlook, is salt.

I am grateful for salt; it's that one ingredient that brings all others together. Without it, your meal might taste like something is missing.

In our daily lives, we often overlook the small things that add immense value and flavour to our existence. One such humble yet vital component is salt. It's a staple in our kitchens and an essential element in our diet, but how often do we pause to appreciate its significance? Can you imagine cooking without a pinch of salt? Some people love salt a bit too much, and I can't blame them!

Don't laugh at me, but while I was cooking at a family friend’s house one faithful day, making samovita slurry, I added salt to it. Naively, I didn’t realize that the samovita and salt were placed in the same area. I just assumed that both containers were samovita flour. When I tasted it, it was too salty to swallow! Another time, I was making moi-moi and thought I had added just enough salt. Guess what? It was an overdose! And then there was a time when I ran out of salt while cooking and had to run to my neighbor for some to add flavor to my meal. That’s the power of salt.

Remember during COVID-19 when people were advised to drink and bathe with salt? Here we are, salt has been saving lives since the ’90s! Lol.

Did you know salt has been a cornerstone of human civilization for thousands of years. Its history is rich and varied, spanning continents and cultures. Salt was so valuable in ancient times that it was used as currency. The word "salary" is derived from the Latin word "salarium," which refers to the payments made to Roman soldiers with salt.

Salt's importance extends beyond its economic value. It has played a crucial role in food preservation, allowing societies to store food and travel longer distances. Civilizations thrived because of their ability to preserve food, thanks to salt. It was a critical trade commodity, leading to the establishment of trade routes and even sparking conflicts and wars.

Beyond its culinary uses, salt has played a significant role in religious rituals and natural remedies across cultures. In many religious traditions, salt is considered a sacred substance, symbolizing purification, protection, and blessings. In Islam, It is reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) always used to have salt before and after meals, and he said that a person who does this act is protected from 70 types of diseases (curses), among which leprosy is the minor one.

In Christianity, salt is used in baptismal rites to symbolize purification and protection from evil. In Hinduism, salt is offered to deities as a symbol of purification and devotion. In some African cultures, salt is used in rituals to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.

Salt has also been used for centuries as a natural remedy for various ailments. It's known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, making it a popular ingredient in homemade remedies for sore throats, skin irritations, and wound healing. Saltwater baths are also believed to promote relaxation, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation.

Be mindful of your salt consumption for health reasons. Opt for high-quality salts like sea salt or Himalayan salt, which offer additional minerals and benefits.
