The mountain of beauty
It was a beautiful Saturday morning when we decided to explore the wonders of nature by going for a hike at Katampe Mountain. This time, it was a different mountain from the one I hiked a month ago. Honestly, if anyone ever says they don't believe in God, they just need to be shown nature. The beauty, the scenery, and the fresh mountain air it's all simply amazing!
Hiking has become a form of exercise for me, but it’s also my way of exploring the beautiful landscapes of Nigeria. I officially started hiking in 2023, and since then, I’ve conquered 10 different mountains in Abuja. The journey has been nothing short of exhilarating, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many beautiful souls along the way, each with a shared love for adventure.
My first hike was at Maitama Mountain, and let me tell you, it was on a rainy morning. Now, normally, I’d be the first to find a cozy spot indoors during such weather, but something about that day was different. Maybe it was the thrill of trying something new or the fear of missing out, but I was seriously contemplating whether to go or not. I mean, rain and heights? Not exactly my dream combo!
I told Sparkle Queen (yes, that’s her name) that I wasn’t sure if I’d make it because of the rain and let’s not forget, I thought I had a fear of heights. But Sparkle Queen, being the motivational guru she is, told me not to worry about anything and just come along. To make things easier, my wonderful friend Jamila even drove to my estate that morning to pick me up, bringing her sister along too. What a squad!
The hike started out just fine until we reached a part of the trail where I had to use both my hands like a cat to climb. And here’s the kicker: I was wearing my abaya. Someone suggested I take it off for ease, but I was determined. "Nope, this is how we're finishing this hike today!" I said. Lol.
Guess what? I made it to the top of the mountain, though I was almost in pieces by the time I got there. But I mean, I made it! It was such a big deal for me to realize that I could climb such heights without feeling frightened. My inner child was doing a happy dance, and honestly, I felt like I’d just won an Olympic gold medal. We had fun meeting cows along the way, and we even saw people worshiping on the mountain. And the view? Oh, the view! You could see the beautiful city of Abuja sprawled out right beneath us. It was breathtaking.
Thank God for Sparkle Queen, who motivated me that day. Since then, I’ve been all in for any hike unless, of course, I’m caught up in a knowledge search class or some serious work that the only time i dont hike. But let’s be real, I try to avoid working on Saturdays. Why? Because Saturdays are my self-care days, dedicated to rejuvenating my mind, soul, and body so I can better serve myself and others.
So, what do you do with your Saturdays? Let’s hear it! Share with us in the comments section below. Maybe we’ll inspire each other to try something new, or maybe I’ll see you on the next hike!
