A Mother’s Grace: Nurturing Love and Dreams
Gratitude for Mothers: The Superhumans Among Us
Today, my gratitude goes out to all mothers and their unmatched patience. I said all mothers because trust me, whether it’s my sister managing her boys or my own childhood memories, it’s clear that mothers are truly superhumans. And when I say “we the children,” I mean myself included an adult baby! 👶 (Yes, I’m still holding on to that title.)
My sister’s two boys and her toddler are visiting for a short holiday, and let me tell you, it has been an enlightening and exhausting experience. Mothers deserve awards, applause, and maybe a yearly vacation on a private island with no questions asked. Let me walk you through my day and why I have even more respect for mothers.
Morning Chaos: Soldiers on a Mission
I woke up with a headache, thinking, Let me just go back to bed after my morning prayers. Maybe I’ll feel better after some more sleep. Oh, how naïve of me! Before I could even settle into dreamland, the soldiers my two nephews woke me unapologetically.
The older two are full of energy, with personalities that could light up a room. One is bold and audacious, the type who will confidently walk into any space and own it. The other is more reserved, but don’t let that fool you he’s a powerhouse when it comes to books and the Quran. And then there’s their six-month-old baby brother, already a force of nature. His boundless energy and insistence on standing while being carried left me wondering if he’s secretly in training for a marathon.
As I groggily faced the day, I found myself roped into their conversations whether I wanted to be or not. Breakfast time came quickly, and I microwaved food for them. Round one: successful. But not long after, it was time for brunch! The cycle was endless, and I was reminded that mothers really don’t get breaks.
Pilot Dreams and Lawsuits
Now, here’s where the day got really interesting. One of my nephews declared with absolute certainty that he wants to become a pilot. Not only that, but he promised to fly his mom and me to Saudi Arabia (and anywhere else we need to go).
But here’s the catch he’s holding me accountable for my promise to take him to the airport to meet a real pilot. This boy has been reminding me daily, and I’m starting to fear he might actually file a civil lawsuit against me for breach of promise. Someone, please, come to my aid!
Meanwhile, his younger brother has dreams of becoming a sailor. His reasoning? “While my brother is up in the air, I’ll take care of the sea!” Allahumma barik (May Almighty bless them). These kids have such big dreams, and I pray they achieve every single one of them and more.
Movie Time and Mayhem
When the kids announced it was movie time, my task was clear: find something educational and entertaining that doesn’t have any LGBTQ wahala. Shoutout to my neighbour for coming through with some excellent recommendations.
The kids were engrossed for a while, but the peace didn’t last long. Fights, complaints, and requests came in rapid succession: “He’s taking my space!” “Why is my drink smaller?” “Can I have more snacks?” At one point, I thought, Mothers truly deserve unlimited spa days for putting up with this level of energy and drama.
The Cleanliness Crisis
I love my space clean and organized. But today? I had to let go of that dream. The living room was in disarray, and I made peace with it for the most part. However, one area where I didn’t compromise was my restroom.
“Did you flush?” became my mantra of the day. The kids’ innocent smiles when reminded made me laugh despite myself. To mothers whose homes are always spotless, I salute you. Whether you rely on house help or tackle it yourself, you’re doing the Lord’s work.
The Lifesaving Sister
Speaking of superheroes, my sister deserves a standing ovation. Even with her hands full managing her boys, she noticed I wasn’t feeling well and took care of my laundry along with her kids’. Allahumma barik (May Almighty bless her).
Her strength and care inspire me daily. Watching her handle motherhood with such grace made me reflect on how much love, patience, and sacrifice go into raising children.
Parenting: A Journey of Growth
Motherhood isn’t just about carrying a child for nine months. It’s about showing up every day with love, compassion, and a commitment to self-improvement. At a seminar last week, a mom shared how healing her emotional wounds transformed her parenting. Her story reminded me that being a good parent starts with working on yourself.
And fathers, don’t think you’re off the hook! Conscious parenting takes two. Together, mothers and fathers create a safe, loving environment where children can thrive.
Fun Fact About Mothers
Did you know the oldest recorded mother was 74 years old? Her name is Erramatti Mangayamma, and she gave birth to twin girls through IVF in 2019. If that doesn’t make you marvel at the strength and resilience of women, I don’t know what will.
Did you know the Guinness World Record for the most children born to one mother is held by a Russian woman who had 69 children in the 1700s? Sixty-nine! I can barely handle three nephews for a few days, so hats off to her patience and stamina.
Call to Action: Celebrate Mothers Today
To everyone reading this: Take a moment today to appreciate the mothers in your life. Whether it’s your mom, sister, or a friend, let them know how much you value their love and sacrifices.
Here are some ideas to show appreciation:
a. Offer to help with chores or errands.
b. Send a thoughtful message or gift.
c. Take them out for a treat or plan a surprise pampering session.
And to all the mothers out there: Please take time to care for yourself. Your well-being is just as important as the love and care you give to others.
As I sit here reflecting on the day, I’m filled with gratitude for the experience. Yes, it was chaotic, and yes, my headache didn’t magically disappear, but witnessing my sister’s motherhood journey up close was inspiring.
To all mothers showing up with love, patience, and strength: Thank you for being the anchors of our lives. We see you, we love you, and we celebrate you.
